🐋 Phase One – Alaska Resident (1997–2001)

In 1993, I changed careers and began selling advertising for the Northwest Travel Guide by Scott Publishing. My first year, I traveled Oregon and Washington and broke all company sales records. Promoted to Supervisor, I chose Alaska and Yukon territories, and broke records again.

In 1996, my wife and I relocated to Anchorage. I sold advertising statewide for Scott Publishing until 1997, when I began working for Alaska Web Sites (Alaskan.com). Nearly 300 print clients became prospects for websites. 1997 was a year of overlapping work, I renewed clients’ print ads and introduced websites as a new advertising medium. Search engines like AltaVista and Lycos were popular then; Google launched in 1998, and I quickly adopted it, recommending it to clients.

By 1999, clients began asking me how to outrank competitors on Google. I invested in Web Position Gold software, mastered the basics of SEO, and soon optimized intuitively. My first two SEO projects—Alaska Sea Kayakers and Chugach Outdoor Center—ranked #1 for their top keywords within weeks of me working on their pages.

From 1999–2001, I consulted with several dozen Alaska businesses, offering one-hour site clinics for $100, often leading to website builds by Alaska Web Art, or portal pages on Alaskan.com. This phase ended abruptly after 9/11, when I relocated to Colorado to be near family.

🐺 Phase Two – Colorado Resident (2002–2018)

After a year of rest, I resumed work, focusing on SEO for personal sites and subscribing to top marketing newsletters, including Michael Campbell’s.

In 2003, I optimized the Trashmasters Celebrity Charity Tournament site. Within weeks, it ranked #1 for ‘Celebrity Golf Tournament’ and ‘Charity Golf Tournament.’ That success led to referrals in Aspen, and by 2005, I had 18 active clients—too many for one person, so I cut my roster by half.

In 2004, I attended a five-day Advanced Search Engine Marketing Workshop by John Alexander and Robin Nobles, earning certifications annually over the next seven years. From 2004–2008, my own site ranked unchallenged at #1 in Google, Yahoo, and MSN for the the coveted search phrase, ‘SEO expert’ and related phrases for six years—an achievement unmatched by any SEO firm.
